NJ Man Must Share Mega Millions Jackpot With Co-Workers
Money comes, money goes — especially for the defendant in the New Jersey Mega Millions lawsuit. A jury has awarded $20 million to the former co-workers of Americo Lopes, leaving him with only a sixth of his original $38.5 million ($24 million after taxes) lottery jackpot.
The co-workers sued Lopes after he refused to share the winnings. They claimed he used money from a group lottery pool to buy the 2009 winning ticket. Lopes disagreed, and instead argued that he had bought the ticket for himself.
Before the six co-workers struck gold, the group had been pitching in and buying weekly lottery tickets for at least three years. Each put $2 into the pool, and Americo Lopes would return with 12 lines of tickets, explains the New York Post.
Lopes claims that, during the winning week, he also bought 12 lines of tickets for himself, reports MSNBC. The winning numbers were on a ticket he allegedly purchased with his own money.
The jury obviously didn’t buy this argument. Lopes’ attorney brought in more than 1,000 of his previously purchased lotto tickets, reports the New York Post. He was trying to show that the winning ticket mirrored a pattern in Lopes’ past personal bets. But not one of Lopes’ personal tickets was worth $12.
This little tidbit is what likely won the Mega Millions lawsuit for the plaintiffs. It showed that Americo Lopes only ever bought 12 rows of tickets when playing for the group. It was out of the ordinary for him to play that many rows for himself.
Now, don’t think this is the end of the Mega Millions lawsuit. Lopes can still appeal the award. And given his anger at the verdict, it appears that he just might.

Frozen Planet - Are you aware of earth's "Nature"
NEW YORK -- "The best stories on our planet are natural ones," Alastair Fothergill says.
But you'd expect him to say that. For two decades with the BBC, Fothergill has produced wildlife documentary series including "Planet Earth," "Blue Planet" and, back in 1993, "Life in the Freezer," which explored Antarctica in all its frigid wonder.
Now he's executive producer of "Frozen Planet," a Discovery Channel/BBC co-production that takes a fresh look at Antarctica as well as its north-end counterpart, the Arctic, in seven gorgeous episodes premiering with the first two hours at 8 p.m. today on Discovery. And although you may not be ready to dismiss filmdom's stars and screenplay writers as unnecessary, "Frozen Planet" makes a strong case that Nature -- captured in the wild -- can equal Hollywood for epic sweep and drama.
Comedy, too. In Sunday's second hour, male penguins by the hundreds of thousands anticipate the spring return of the females, for whose favor each male must compete by building a swankier nest than his rivals. In a delightful sequence, a painstaking penguin gathers stones one by one, only to have them filched, one after another, by a scheming neighbor whenever the hapless suitor's back is turned. These performers, with their Chaplin-esque gait and impeccable timing, would have been right at home in a 1920s two-reeler.
There's also bittersweet romance on "Frozen Planet." Nature's ultimate loner, a 1,400-pound male polar bear, has lumbered across the ice all winter in search of a mate come spring. Picking up her scent from 10 miles away, he finds her, after which they share a tender interlude. Then, just two weeks later, their brief encounter ends as they are fated to part.
Plus, there are thrilling, life-or-death confrontations in the series. Three-ton elephant seals brawl over females. A pack of 25 wolves brings down a huge bison. A wide-eyed Weddell seal falls prey to hungry orca whales that, working as a team, can stir up giant waves to wash these frantic seals from the refuge of their ice floes.
And talk about "special effects"! An unprecedented time-lapse shot underwater records the growth of a brinicle -- an ice stalactite progressing downward toward the seabed -- killing everything its frozen plume touches. This otherworldly sight is as eerie and magical as a CGI effect from a sci-fi film. But it's real.
"That's the thing about the natural world: It gives you amazing natural drama," "Frozen Planet" series producer Vanessa Berlowitz says. "It looks like it's scripted, but we don't fake anything. Everything that we film is a complete portrayal of reality. And the audience thinks, 'Wow, they did that without trained animals!' "
Berlowitz has produced and directed a score of BBC documentaries, including two episodes of "Planet Earth," and, like Fothergill, she logged time at both poles for "Frozen Planet." She lived aboard a Royal Naval icebreaker for four months filming penguins and whales, and, in the Arctic, spent three weeks filming female polar bears and their cubs while she was five months' pregnant.
Through it all, the filmmakers served as passive observers. But they took a cinematic approach to planning multi-angle coverage of action they hoped would unfold.
"We were very keen to storyboard the sequences beforehand," Fothergill says. "Then, when we got on location, we would sit down and say, 'Have we got all the angles? Let's work it all out.'"
Adds Berlowitz, "We approached these holy-grail sequences thinking, 'What will it take?'"
The many up-close-and-personal scenes they bagged say as much about "Frozen Planet" as the vast scope of the enterprise, which can be expressed in remarkable statistics: four years in production; 38 camera people; combined number of days in the field: 2,356; 11/2 years at sea; hours trapped in blizzards: 840.
"The weather is often rubbish," Fothergill acknowledges. But physical discomfort isn't the real problem. "Everybody thinks it's all about storms and cold -- but it's actually about 'gray light,' when the ice looks really, really ugly. You can wait for weeks, and all the while the polar bear is doing his stuff, but you have to say, 'Don't shoot it. Wait until the light is good.' "
Today's episodes, "The Ends of the Earth" and "Spring," will be followed in subsequent weeks by "Summer" and "Winter." (Yes, the polar regions have seasons -- in fact, greater seasonal changes than anywhere else on our planet, as the series' narrator, Alec Baldwin, reminds us.)
On April 8, viewers go behind the cameras for a "Making Of" episode, which settles many how-did-they-get-that-shot questions raised by previous installments (and helps explain how people and equipment can function in temperatures as low as minus-58 degrees).
Then, as part of the two-hour finale on April 15, "On Thin Ice" investigates what climate change will mean for the people and wildlife at the poles, as well as the rest of the planet in between. This episode charting the effect of rising temperatures is reported by British naturalist David Attenborough (who hosted "Life in the Freezer" 19 years ago).
"The structure of our series," Fothergill says, "is to show the places. Then we engage in the animals' drama and lives. Then we show a bit of how we went about making the series. Then we let viewers learn about the environmental reality of it all in an objective, nonsensational, nonjudgmental way.'"
Hearing that, Berlowitz quotes the late ecologist-documentary superstar Jacques Cousteau, who famously noted, "We only protect what we love."
"Our goal," Berlowitz says, "is to do films that make people fall in love with the animals and places. What we want is for people to love them."

In a reversal, an FDA advisory committee backs the weight-loss drug Qnexa despite health risks after its maker, Vivus, promises strict oversight
A panel of medical experts voted overwhelmingly Wednesday to endorse the controversial weight-loss drug Qnexa, clearing the way for the Food and Drug Administration to approve a new prescription obesity medication for the first time since 1999.
The FDA will issue a final ruling later this year, but the agency typically follows the recommendations of its advisory committees.
The 20-2 vote in favor of Qnexa was a surprising reversal from 2010, when the same advisory committee decided that the drug's risks of heart problems and birth defects outweighed its weight-loss benefits.
In a clinical trial involving 4,323 people, Qnexa — a combination of the anticonvulsant drug topiramate and the appetite suppressant phentermine — led to an average loss of about 10% of total body weight in the first year of use. Many users also saw improvements in blood pressure.
But the trials also found that that the drug caused a slight increase in heart rate, which can boost the odds of a heart attack or stroke. In addition, researchers detected an increased risk of birth defects — typically cleft lip — in women who became pregnant while taking the drug.
Vivus Inc., the drug's manufacturer, addressed those concerns by proposing a tightly controlled system for prescribing Qnexa. To prevent birth defects, patients who take the drug will have to undergo monthly pregnancy testing and healthcare providers will get special training on the medication's risks and benefits. Vivus will also restrict distribution of the drug to registered pharmacies, among other measures.
"We will know who the prescribers are. We will know who has been trained," Dr. Barbara Troupin, Vivus' senior director of global medical affairs, told the advisory committee. "We are confident the Qnexa [risk management program] balances the safeguards while allowing access for appropriate patients."
According to the clinical trial data and previous studies, the risk of having a baby with a cleft lip is two to five times greater in women who took topiramate.
"The simple reality is, if you're pregnant or planning on getting pregnant, it's not the right drug for you," said Joe Nadglowski, chief executive of the Obesity Action Coalition, a patient advocacy group based in Tampa, Fla., that supports approval of Qnexa.
Vivus, based in Mountain View, Calif., proposed a similar program to monitor heart risks in patients. Several panel members strongly encouraged the company to conduct a post-marketing study to help identify the potential cardiovascular risks.
At the panel's daylong meeting Wednesday in Silver Spring, Md., several members of the Endocrinologic and Metabolic Drugs Advisory Committee said they worried about Qnexa's side effects but believed the benefits outweighed the risks.
More than 35% of American adults are obese, including about 5% who are morbidly obese, and an additional 33% are overweight, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. Those extra pounds are more than just a cosmetic issue; they also increase one's risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, osteoarthritis, certain types of cancers and possibly dementia.
"The most encouraging thing is that just about every member really heard the message about the need to treat obesity," said Ted Kyle, the advocacy committee chairman of the Obesity Society. "Obesity is not a trivial disease."
Only one prescription diet drug is available in the United States. That drug, orlistat, blocks absorption of fat and is sold under the trade name Xenical. Qnexa appears to work by suppressing appetite and increasing feelings of fullness.
It's not clear why the medication raises heart rate, but such an increase is typically viewed as a marker of cardiovascular risk, said Dr. Michael S. Lauer, director of the division of cardiovascular sciences at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and a member of the advisory panel.
Lauer cast one of the two votes against approval, saying that the FDA should first ask Vivus to complete a study that provided detailed cardiovascular risk data. Otherwise, he said, FDA approval "would be a decision based on hopes, surrogates and suppositions."
"We have seen many cases in medicine where we thought we understood the pathology of disease … and we turned out to be wrong," Lauer said. "With an epidemic as serious as obesity, we need to do this right."
If approved by the FDA, Qnexa would be targeted for people with a body mass index of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 or above for people who also have weight-related health problems, such as diabetes or sleep apnea. A BMI of 25 to 29 indicates a person is overweight, and 30 or greater is considered obese.
The vote sent Vivus shares soaring to more than $21 in after-hours trading, double the official closing price of $10.55.

Lent is a Christian Festival. In the past it was a long, strict religious fast when people gave up all rich food. The day before Lent starts is known as Shrove Tuesday.
Lent is the time when Christians prepare for the greatest of the Christian festivals known as Easter, by thinking of things they have done wrong.
It was a time for spring-cleaning lives, as well as homes.
What happens during Lent today?
The Christian church no longer imposes a strict fast. Lent is a time when some Christians try to overcome their own faults because they believe that it was man's sin which led Jesus to be crucified.
Some Christians try to follow the example of Jesus in the desert by giving up luxuries and practising self-discipline. And they try to put aside more time to prayer and religious acts so that they can really let God into their lives.

What happens during Lent today?
The Christian church no longer imposes a strict fast. Lent is a time when some Christians try to overcome their own faults because they believe that it was man's sin which led Jesus to be crucified.
Some Christians try to follow the example of Jesus in the desert by giving up luxuries and practising self-discipline. And they try to put aside more time to prayer and religious acts so that they can really let God into their lives.

Many churches hold special Lent services. In some towns the churches of different denominations join together in groups to discuss and share their Christian faith.

Lent begins with Ash Wednesday and lasts for six and a half weeks.

- Krewe of Iris : - Founded in 1917, The Krewe of Iris first stated parading in 1959, and it is the oldest and largest all-female krewe in New Orleans. Named for the Goddess of the Rainbow and Messenger to the Gods, the krewe sticks to strict Carnival traditions, wearing full length masks and white gloves. The Krewe of Iris has 900 riders, 32 floats, 12 equestian units and marching bands. Throws include emblem cups, medallion beads, ceramic Iris beads, dolls and doubloons. - Krewe of Okeanos :- Founded in 1949, the Krewe of Okeanos is named for the Greek god of oceans and fertile valleys.Formed by more than 250 male and female riders, Okeanos is known for its elaborately-costumed captain and king
- Krewe of Napoleon : - The Krewe of Napoleon was created in 1980 to give Jefferson Parish an excitingly different approach to the Mardi Gras season. From the very beginning, the Corps de Napoleon's primary goal has been to honor the French heritage of New Orleans and its surrounding parishes. This differs from other krewes and organizations who mostly choose Greek or Roman mythological figures as their names. The Corps de Napoleon instead selected France's greatest hero as its namesake.
- Krewe of Bacchus :- Early in 1968, the Krewe of Bacchus broke with Carnival tradition by staging a Sunday night parade with bigger and more spectacular floats than anything previously seen in Carnival. They then decided to have a national celebrity king lead its parade, breaking ranks with 113 years of Carnival tradition.
- Now, with more than 1,000 members and 31 animated super-floats, the Krewe of Bacchus is revered as one of the most spectacular krewes in Carnival history.
- Bacchus is the most innovative and imitated krewe this century. Owen "Pip" Brennan Jr. and a group of 13 friends decided to form Bacchus in 1968 to put spark back into the celebration of Mardi Gras.
- The krewe's large signature floats, Rendezvous supper dance with Las Vegas-type entertainment, and national celebrity monarchs are just a few of the tradition-breaking moves that set the Krewe of Bacchus apart.

- Krewe of Thoth : - Founded in 1947, the Krewe of Thoth is named for the Egyptian Patron of Wisdom and Inventor of Science, Art and Letters. The krewe's original parade route was designed specifically to serve people that were unable to attend other parades in the city. The route passed in front of 14 institutions that cared for people with disabilities and illnesses.
- Today's Krewe of Thoth includes over 1,200 riders and 40 floats, and the krewe still makes it a point to provide a Mardi Gras parade for some of the same healthcare facilities as they did in the early days.
- Among Thoth's throws are 3-D die-cut metallic necklaces, 6" stuffed polar bears and many varieties of specialized doubloons.
- Krewe of Mid City :- Founded in 1933, the Krewe of Mid-City is the 5th oldest continuously parading organization of the New Orleans Mardi Gras season. Often called "The best day parade in Mardi Gras," Mid-City has gained a reputation for having themes dedicated to children and for having some of the best bands in Mardi Gras from all over the country.

Bad News For Galaxy Lover... It's Banned Now
An Australian court has temporarily banned Samsung from selling its new Galaxy tablet computer in the country, another setback for the South Korean electronics giant in a global patent battle with Apple Inc. that accuses it of slavishly copying the iPad and iPhone.
Federal Court Justice Annabelle Bennett on Thursday granted a temporary injunction against sales of Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia. The decision prevents Samsung Electronics Co. from selling the device in Australia in its current form until a further court order, or until a pending patent lawsuit between the warring technology giants is resolved.
The ruling is a blow for Samsung, which had hoped to launch the new product in time for Christmas sales. It comes after courts in other countries including Germany and the Netherlands made judgments that upheld Apple's claims that its intellectual property had been appropriated by Samsung.
The patent battle spanning 10 countries has underlined the perception of Samsung as an efficient imitator among technology companies rather than a pace setter. Over the years, the company has grown to become the global No. 1 in TVs and No. 2 in smartphones by sales. But unlike archrival Apple Inc., it has not mesmerized consumers with its originality and innovation.
In April, Cupertino, California-based Apple Inc. sued Samsung in the United States, alleging the product design, user interface and packaging of Samsung's Galaxy devices "slavishly copy" the iPhone and iPad.
Suwon, South Korea-based Samsung Electronics Co. fought back with lawsuits of its own, accusing Apple of patent infringement of its wireless telecommunications technology.
Apple filed the Australian lawsuit in July, accusing Samsung of copying its touch screen technology. In her ruling Thursday, Bennett said she was granting the temporary injunction in part because she felt Apple had a sufficient likelihood of winning the trial against Samsung.
The judge's full orders will not be published until Friday. It was not immediately clear whether Samsung could — or would — attempt to sell a variation of the device that removed the features Apple objected to in the Australian lawsuit.
"We are disappointed with this ruling and Samsung will be seeking legal advice on its options," Samsung said in a statement. "Samsung will continue its legal proceeding against Apple's claim in order to ensure our innovative products remain available to consumers."
Samsung, which filed its Australian countersuit in September, said it remained confident it could prove Apple violated its wireless technology patents.
"We will continue to legally assert our intellectual property rights against those who violate Samsung's patents and free ride on our technology," the company said in a statement.
An attorney for Apple declined to comment after the hearing.

Amazon in talks to start books-on-demand subscription service
Amazon already dominates book sales, whether they be paper or digital. It also has a very firm grasp on the e-reader market with millions of Kindles already sold. But Amazon is apparently not satisfied with just selling digital books to Kindle owners, it wants to offer a subscription service for them too.
If you use Netflix to stream videos for a monthly fee, Amazon believes you’ll pay a subscription to gain access to a large library of digital books too. The e-tailer is thought to be in talks with several book publishers trying to sign them up to such a service.
In return for paying each publisher a healthy fee, Amazon would be able to offer access to potentially thousands of titles as part of a rental/download service. Users would pay a monthly subscription for the privilege of access, or potentially it could form part of the existing Amazon Prime $79/year service.
This isn’t a new idea, and it’s one publisher O’Reilly is already seeing a lot of success with through its Safari Books Online service. However, Safari is aimed squarely at the technology market and costs either $27.99 or $42.99 per month depending on your level of access. I’d expect Amazon would have to be a lot cheaper, closer to Netflix pricing in fact, if such a subscription service was to take off.

As a Kindle owner I do find that the price of Kindle editions is on the high side for the books I want. I’m sure this is more down to the publisher than it is Amazon who would happily sell digital books cheaper if it meant higher sales and more revenue.
With that in mind, I would definitely consider a subscription service if it was priced like Netflix and offered up access to all Kindle books. That second prerequisite is key. I don’t believe such a service would work if you could only access some books. It also wouldn’t work if new releases aren’t included, unless of course they could be purchased at a discount or arrived on the service within say, a month of the release.

Are you Aware Of This Dangrous MAC Trojan Virus
Look out, Apple users: There's another Mac OS X Trojan out in the wild, and it might be heading your way.
The sneaky malware pretends to a be a Chinese-language PDF document about the Pinnacle Islands, eight uninhabited rocks in the East China Sea simultaneously claimed by Japan, Taiwan and mainland China.
If you open the file, which could appear as an emailed attachment or as a Web link, the document, written in traditional Chinese ideograms, does indeed display. But a Trojan silently installs itself in the background as you try to sort out centuries-old territorial claims.
The Trojan doesn't really do anything — yet. But F-Secure, the Finnish security firm that discovered it, notes that it lays the groundwork for much more sophisticated attacks against Macs.
The Trojan installs "backdoor" software to give a remote operator control of the machine, and sets up a communication link with a currently inactive command-and-control server.
Those two steps, repeated in thousands of Macs, could create a Mac-only botnet — a vast army of "zombie" machines silently distributing malware and spam. Substitute an English-language document for global appeal, flip on the command-and-control server, and you're in business.
The growing market penetration of Macs in the worldwide PC market, coupled with the general cluelessness of Mac owners about the need for anti-virus software, has created a ripe field of millions of powerful, unprotected machines ready for exploitation by cyber criminals.
And for a cyber criminal, the best kind of botnet to run would be one comprised of machines whose owners think they'll never be infected.
Fortunately, anti-virus companies are here to help. F-Secure's paid Mac anti-virus software has already incorporated protection against this Mac-only Trojan, as has Sophos' free one.

The Owner Of Facebook Had Received an Attack by Hacker
Last night Zuckerberg’s fan page on the website was attacked by hackers, who took over his page and posted the following message, pretending to be him: “Let the hacking begin: If Facebook needs money, instead of going to the banks, why doesn't Facebook let its users invest in Facebook in a social way? Why not transform Facebook into a ‘social business’ the way Nobel Price winner Muhammad Yunus described it? http://bit.ly/fs6rT3 What do you think? #hackercup2011.”
"Facebook users - famous or not - need to take better care of their social networking security," said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at internet security firm Sophos. "Mark Zuckerberg might be wanting to take a close look at his privacy and security settings after this embarrassing breach. It's not clear if he was careless with his password, was phished, or sat down in a Starbucks and got sidejacked while using an unencrypted wireless network, but however it happened, it's left egg on his face just when Facebook wants to reassure users that it takes security and privacy seriously. Maybe Mr Zuckerberg would be wise to get a refresher on computer security best practice."

Falling in love is 'more scientific than you think,' according to a new study
A new meta-analysis study conducted by Syracuse University Professor Stephanie Ortigue is getting attention around the world. The groundbreaking study, "The Neuroimaging of Love," reveals falling in love can elicit not only the same euphoric feeling as using cocaine, but also affects intellectual areas of the brain.
Researchers also found falling in love only takes about a fifth of a second!!
Ortigue is an assistant professor of psychology and an adjunct assistant professor of neurology, both in The College of Arts and Sciences at Syracuse University.
Results from Ortigue's team revealed when a person falls in love, 12 areas of the brain work in tandem to release euphoria-inducing chemicals such as dopamine, oxytocin, adrenaline and vasopression. The love feeling also affects sophisticated cognitive functions, such as mental representation, metaphors and body image.
The findings beg the question, "Does the heart fall in love, or the brain?"
"That's a tricky question always," says Ortigue. "I would say the brain, but the heart is also related because the complex concept of love is formed by both bottom-up and top-down processes from the brain to the heart and vice versa. For instance, activation in some parts of the brain can generate stimulations to the heart, butterflies in the stomach. Some symptoms we sometimes feel as a manifestation of the heart may sometimes be coming from the brain."
Other researchers also found blood levels of nerve growth factor, or NGF, also increased. Those levels were significantly higher in couples who had just fallen in love. This molecule involved plays an important role in the social chemistry of humans, or the phenomenon 'love at first sight.' "These results confirm love has a scientific basis," says Ortigue.
